Shadows

My suggestion of 'shooting' shadows became a greater struggle for me than I expected. I had everything going against me (got out of work late, didn't get home until 7pm); however, I did the assignment with the best of intentions. Above are artificial flowers that I took outside. Through the camera I saw heavy shadows throughout the image. On the computer, those shadows did not show up as obviously as I had hoped. Using a filter caused the dark areas to deepen and so that is why I chose to use it. Below, a more traditional interpretation of the shadow assignment. A fan, casting a shadow on white board that I had leaning against the wall caught my attention. Again, it looked "cooler" through the camera than it turned out in reality. Oh well. Though these photos won't make me famous, I stretched my thinking and technique today.

Stretching the technique and mind is always a great thing and I think you did it with both of these. The first one is very artistic with the filter applied, love the colors, and the fan is also appealing. I think I'd like to see it in sepia or higher contrast to make the shadow stand out. Don't give up on the shadows..you've got something here!

the fan pix is awesome.i love the way you caught the edge of the real fan in the shot.
the flowers are cool too.i wonder if this is how fabric designs are made?

The first image reminded me of something, but I couldn't put my finger on it until I read Bridget's comment. Fabric! That's what it looks like! Good creative use of the filter on that one. The fan image really caught my attention, though...it's terrific! I almost did the same thing with a ceiling fan...guess great minds think alike. :-)
Great job on such a busy day. Thank you for a fun assignment!

Photographing shadows around this time of year is a great challenge. In england, most of time is grey with rain. But Great job! I like the first one for its abstractness. After all what makes a shadow? So cool result!
