Bokeh?

Bokeh is different than sharpness. Sharpness is what happens at the point of best focus. Bokeh is what occurs in the out of focus areas of a photo, using light, colors, movement and more.

These were my attempts at creating a more interesting out of focus background. Sometimes Bokeh is subtle and sometimes bold.

Nice! Love the colors. News photographers just call it a shallow depth of field, at least at the papers I worked for.

These are two, very different examples of bokeh and both are very appealing!

In the first image, I love the visible points of light, as well as the rich, gorgeous color of the bottle as the light shines thru it.

But I'm drawn to the second image. It is a simple yet incredibly beautiful subject. The shallow DOF enhances the subject while creating a pleasing "bokeh" background blur. The random blades of grass in the foreground add a natural, realistic touch.

Wonderful job of a difficult assignment!!! :-)

These are really nice, Steve. Maybe we should a second assignment for Bokeh now that we've got the idea of how to do it, what do you think?

I love the blades of grass in front of the mushroom. Makes it so much more "earthy" than if you had cleaned them away.
