Assignment- A picture within a picture

This assignment was a challenge. It was difficult to hold an image up to a scene where the scene has changed (it's even difficult to describe), and keep both shots in sharp focus. I like the concept and was successful up to a point. I will try again with subjects that I'm more connected with, using some family photos for example.

The End Of My View

The beautiful barn, across the street from my house, will soon no longer be there. I must say that even though I will never forgive my neighbors they did have the barn taken down in style! They were considerate enough to have the barn dismantled in a photo-friendly way. This scene unfolded by surprise since I did not know the barn was coming down; therefore, I grabbed my camera and shot the images through my bedroom window. They aren't award winning photos but they tell a story.

The photo above has a vignette effect and the photo below has a 'glow' added to it. Since the sky was so bright and white I chose a 'glow' to make the subject blend with the sky. Rather than apologize for the white sky I worked with it.

Below, I turned the image into an old-fashioned image. Again, I think the subject lends itself to an antique look.

Sometimes Facebook has value to me! I saw this posting and "stole" the image. So what makes one happy? I read or heard (who can remember with all the tv shows, books, radio and friends) an explanation that has really stuck with me. All that people want in life is to be heard and valued. From that, happiness is achieved. To me, that is a powerful lesson to learn. The older I get the more that lesson rings true for me and those around me. When you have people around you that do not listen or value you, they must be let go. One can't be happy with toxic people influencing one's life.

Due to Irene I was not able to see Stevie Nicks in concert. I had the best tickets too! How could I be too upset when others were watching their homes and property wash away? I will catch Stevie another time when she will most certainly propose to me!

Basement Stairs

These cellar stairs were eerie as the lone light bulb flickered often. I'm riding out the storm and trying to pass time before the power goes out. These might not be the best photos but it is therapeutic for me. Am I the only one very worried about a flooded basement and falling trees? This is when I wish I lived in an apartment!

Windows

An old factory that I visited contained a variety of windows. Each window had a character of its own, performing unique functions, casting different shadows and in a surprising nature (photo 1) creating a rainbow of different colors. In the first photo, I turned the overall scene into black and white, however, the colors on the floor are as they were. Photo 2 has no manipulation beyond cropping and photo 3 has a 'tin' filter added to it.

Summer Sun

Photographers know the power of the summer sun. Depending on its location in the sky, an image takes upon a very different look and presents a very different photographic challenge. Above, the sunset casts shadows and adds "noise" (speckled appearance). I added a little extra noise. Below, the sun, around 11am, provides bright light, "blowing out" and image in many cases.

Perhaps if we gave teenagers a "canvas" against buildings that are sitting empty, our neighborhoods would be more colorful and look more respectful. Studies show that murals, in the inner city, have a low rate of vandalism.

Passing by a back alley I found this woman acting very strangely. Though her behavior was odd, the photo-op was undeniable. I hope this vagrant is well, has found a home, and is healthy and happy. I like to create stories when photographing. I like to imagine the 'story' of the subject. In this case, I will name the anonymous person Trisha.

Old Time Gate

At a recent photography meeting the topic of 'scene junk', and the need to eliminate it, was raised by Linda, the expert speaker. In this photo I had to move in tight and at a strong angle in order to get a shot. I might have just passed up the shot altogether but I liked the shadows and the rustic look of the gate. In the manipulation process I ended up adding a soft look/glow to make the image a touch more ethereal. After all, this was in a cemetery. For what it is worth, enlarging the photo shows the image as intended, much brighter.

I am pleased with the contrast in colors of the dark purple, light purple and bright green leaves. Below, I found a few petals had fallen onto one of the large green leaves. I find the perspective to be interesting.

Nature

Summer is my favorite season because I'm able and willing to get outside to see all that nature has to offer. The deer was less than a stone throws away and didn't mind me pulling up along side of it. It didn't mind the electric window going down or the 'gun-like' camera! It was the most peaceful moment. A car in the distance spooked the deer and it disappeared in the woods. I was honored that she didn't mind making a connection with me. Below is a photograph that I shot with my new, point and shoot camera. That Sony camera continues to impress me.

It always amazes me, when I go to an urban area, in this case Syracuse, how many parks and other outdoor facilities are available. It was nice to see people running and blading and families enjoying the many playgrounds. I've always felt that city life was for me!

A trip to Troy, New York, resulted in a few shots that I like. This shot, taken by my new camera is pleasing to me. There weren't many moments when the sky was blue; however, I see a hint of it here.

Currently, I am reading a non-fictional account of a woman trying to rescue her children from the Shakers. This account takes place in the 1800s and "paints" a fascinating look at Shaker life. The main character, Eunice, though cheated and manipulated by Shaker society, did not deny the beauty of their sprawling farms. Here is a small part of the Shaker's beautiful, sprawling landscape. The Great Divorce, by Ilyon Woo tells a very unique story about a very unique society.

I imagine that this latch and lock once protected the items beyond the door. Sadly, this lock now prevents trespassers from entering the center of the building. The many floors and an even greater number of rooms, of a once thriving factory, now sit waiting for a wrecking ball. Upstate New York is literally crumbling in all corners of the state. These deteriorating buildings serve as a reminder of the demoralization of 'dying' cities everywhere. People are leaving New York in droves. Given the means to do so, I'd be part of that crowd.

I learned that Shaker's like color, though they also stress simplicity. The desire for color seems contradictory to me as color, to me, represents differences, creativity and pleasure. I found the colors, in this cabinet area to be striking. Below? Well...sheep, enough said. Compared to my friends, who went to the same Shaker Village, my photos are "baaaddd". Get it? Sheep..."baaadd"..ok I'm tired!

My sister's favorite character in the Pooh series. My challenge, to make Eeyore look bright and yet try to create a slight "mood" which Eeyore possesses. For the "mood" I decided to use the soothing colors of blue and green to circle this character. I have to say, shooting these Pez dispensers has been a challenge, even more difficult than people! I'll share another, another time.

This farm is across the street from my house and the light often creates interesting shadows and drama due to the metal roof. It has been so windy at my house, and at the farm as well, that it feels as if hurricane strength winds have come to visit. I decided to photograph the farm and combine the image with the "stormy winds" that I was experiencing. The dramatic sky, which in its original form was a sunset, has become ominous with a little manipulation.

Bald Mountain, Old Forge New York

What a fun hike! This short, but moderately difficult hike, is well worth it. The views are wonderful. There must have been 60 or more hikers enjoying the day with me. Though that number of hikers would usually bother me a bit, today it was understandable. Babies, strapped onto their dad's back even made the trip. I lucked out with blue skies, instead of the dreaded white that most photographers dread. If you can get to Old Forge, definitely do this hike!

Keeping that camera handy in my car, I quickly pulled over to the side of the road to snap this one. NO saturation at all. "Noise" because I tried lightening the bottom a bit to no avail. Because of the dark foreground, I cropped it an odd size. Making the photo brighter simply took away the drama from the sky. Maybe it was more beautiful with my eyes? or do you like this?

What a great hike! The views from the ledges of this mountain never end! Though I'm fearful of heights I did feel like I was on top of the world, looking down. I was fascinated with the picture above. I shot that scene a dozen times and when the owners came out I knew I had the image I wanted. Look at the old bus/van and that red barn!

The image below is an example of the hundreds of photos one could take from the top! I hope these images are strong, not just because I'm attached to them. I'll post more another time.

Girl Hiding In The Shadows

This image may require some explanation. While "hiking" (actually a nature walk), I came across this old doll laying in the woods. Creepy? Yes! However, there is an abandoned house not far from where the doll was found. Still Creepy? Yes! Anyway, the "pure" photo was too realistic and disturbing to me (b/c I'm such a deep artist! ha). By using several filters and colors I wanted to retain some of the mood of the scene yet create a more artistic feel with the lines, swirls and colors chosen.

Without the explanation would you have recognized what it is that you are looking at? Pretend it wasn't my photo b/c you all know me (I'm not going to use a live model). I know my photography lately isn't what pleases everyone but I've been purposely pushing the limits a bit to create conversation.

The above photo was taken around 4pm and the bottom image around 7pm. This is proof that light does change the appearance of the same subject. This frog is alive (for those prop users). Though he traveled in the three hours, I found him hanging out around my garden. I added texture to the photo above (best seen enlarged). I don't get to shoot nature/animals often so this was a treat!

Bokeh?

Bokeh is different than sharpness. Sharpness is what happens at the point of best focus. Bokeh is what occurs in the out of focus areas of a photo, using light, colors, movement and more.

These were my attempts at creating a more interesting out of focus background. Sometimes Bokeh is subtle and sometimes bold.

Fortunately I am able to be home during the summer months. After a school year of ups and downs, crazy schedules and crazy teens, there is such peace that I feel during the summer. I get restless and I do miss my job; however, it is wonderful to take walks, sleep an hour later or take a nap for no reason. This image reflects how I was feeling when I photographed the object...at peace.

Road Trip From The Past

I love old photos. Though the photos are usually not perfectly framed nor exposed correctly, there is a character that each picture possesses.

The image below is my favorite. Were these cars good in the snow? If you look closely you can see the people sitting in the car. Who knows what they were thinking? Where were they going or coming home from? So many questions could be asked.

Strawberry Picking!

It is difficult to get my mother to smile naturally....she is a photographer's challenge. Above is a natural smile for her. Move the berry down a little? yeah....but for my photo frame it doesn't much matter! I like the mountains in the background as well. The Schoharie Valley is beautiful this time of year.

We only moved about three yards and we picked 9 quarts of strawberries!

I know this isn't the most flattering photo; however, this nice lady, who spoke with my mother, was a character and this is her in her glory! Picking strawberries an living in the Schoharie, NY area seemed to please her very much!

I wish I had been with my friends when we shared our macro assignment. I am not a fan of macro...well I'm not a fan of the tripod which seems necessary for macro! With these images I got off my lazy butt and used the tripod!

The calendar may say that Spring is the air; however, the woods aren't so expressive. On a bike ride today, the woods were dark, bare and brown. Though shadows suggest a bright sun, there was a biting wind and definite chill in the air. I'll return next month to document the changes.

A Troubled Church

I recently visited a museum in NYC and spoke to a friend who said that she does not like art that is used as commentary for problems in the world today. She felt too many artists use their medium as a way of making social judgements and that that isn't the purpose of art. It struck me, at that moment, that not a few days earlier I had taken the image above, realizing the symbolism of a church behind bars. I, unlike my friend, feel it appropriate to use art in order to invoke conversation. I believe it worthy to discuss powerful and incredibly wealthy, world religions and their abuses. Whether supporting ancient crusades that killed millions, turning their backs on Jews who were slaughtered or ignoring the plight of thousands upon thousands of sexually abused boys and girls who needed protection and nurturing, the structure and power of religious institutions should be of interest. If art can draw out the controversy, rallying those who support and those who criticize, all the better. Through debate, rumours are put to rest, respect is restored, history is learned and people are saved and comforted. What can be wrong with that?

I can only imagine the wealth that was found in northeastern cities. The cities that I know are struggling financially. The streets, bridges, houses, businesses and the mood of towns and cities across upstate New York are in a poor state. Here one sees a hole on top of the handrail, perhaps stolen or broken off, certainly a symbol of troubled times.

I found this gem tucked away in a trash bin, waiting to be emptied. I didn't like it much at the time I took it; however, at below zero temperatures I now have come to appreciate the warmth found in the image. I wonder what it is about warm temperatures that bring out my creativity and desire to think creatively. Maybe I was once an animal that hibernated during the winter months?
